In the Global Learning Office, we know that word of mouth is the biggest way students learn about study abroad opportunities. The power of talking to friends, hearing about an experience, and overcoming application anxiety cannot be overstated and our Peer Program aims to harness that power and spread the word to all corners of campus! As a Peer in the Global Learning Office, you have the ability to encourage other students to experience the same things you did and talk to them about your study abroad experience as much as you want.
As a Global Learning Peer Advisor, you will have the opportunity to be part of a peer cohort of study abroad alumni while getting professional office work experience. While not an RSO, the peer cohort often operates as a student club with a hint of helping out around the office. General duties include:
- Must be based on the Pullman campus.
- Be the face of Global Learning in our Resource Room (Bryan Hall 105) to answer student questions and route advisees to their appointments.
- Help students select a program and optimize their experience
- Present your experiences abroad to various groups on campus
- Help plan and participate in Global Learning events such as the Study Abroad Fair, Orientations, and workshops
- Commit to at least one semester of 4-6 hours per week (we prefer if you’re with us for the full academic year, though!)
- Complete at least 3 outreach events per semester
- Attend weekly all-peer gatherings to work with fellow peers to help brainstorm outreach ideas – snacks are almost always included
Internship credit may be available through ASCC or your academic department.
Compensation
At this time, Global Learning is unable to pay peer advisors. Though volunteer-based, students should expect to receive professional development and training, resume reviews, and additional benefits throughout their time as a Peer Advisor. They will receive personalized coaching from the Global Learning professional staff on ways to go abroad again and will be connected to additional resources on campus and globally.
Students who studied abroad with an affiliated provider may have the opportunity to be paid by their provider’s alumni ambassador program. More information can be found on the “Provider Alumni Ambassador” tab in the application. Students who are part of an Alumni Ambassador program through their provider are required to be Peer Advisors with Global Learning.
