In the Carson College of Business, students are highly encouraged to utilize LinkedIn to network, find jobs, and connect in professional settings. Why does the Academic Success and Career Center use Handshake? What are the benefits? How are these resources similar?
Job Search Functions
LinkedIn and Handshake both have job search functions that are fairly similar, but Handshake has a few features you should know about:
- Save your job search parameters and get emailed updates about new jobs with your chosen specifications (location, part- vs. full-time, internship, pay, job description, etc.)
- On-Campus positions are all posted on Handshake almost exclusively
- Sorting jobs by your school-endorsed qualifications (Major, GPA, etc.)
- School labels that can tell you about an employer’s connections to WSU (whether or not the employer attends Career Expo and other events on campus, alumni employees, etc.)

Connecting with Fellow Cougs
On Handshake employer profiles and job postings, you can also see alumni that have worked at the company and message them.

Here is Lamb Weston’s Handshake profile. In the “Students Who’ve Worked Here” section, you can see alumni that interned or worked at the company, their positions, and their Handshake profiles. Reaching out through the messaging function is a great way to get a personalized review of a company!
Events
WSU-specific events are posted on Handshake! Companies specifically looking to hire Washington State Cougars will reach out via Handshake and create events–on-campus and virtual–that are excellent networking opportunities. Handshake will also connect you to events associated with the Career Expo that result in in-person opportunities to network.
Why?
Handshake is another resource you can use to launch yourself successfully into your professional industry. Because of its connections with the school, jobs and events can be more personalized and relevant when you learn the platform and filter effectively.
