The Ultimate Guide to Safe Job Searching

As students at Washington State University, it is important to protect yourself from fraudulent employers and job scams while searching for employment opportunities.

Handshake is a reliable platform for finding legitimate job opportunities, as the university partners with the platform to provide trusted employers and job offers to students.

However, it is still important to be cautious and follow these guidelines to ensure your safety while job searching:

  1. Only accept job promotions and offers directly from Handshake. Be cautious if you receive a job offer via personal email, as it may not be legitimate.
  2. Familiarize yourself with common job scams. Forbes has a great article here.
  3. Research the company and the recruiter before accepting a job offer. Check out the company website and see if you can find the name of the recruiter listed on the job posting.
  4. If a job seems too good to be true, such as being offered a large sum of money for minimal work, be suspicious and flag the employer for Handshake to investigate.
  5. Never cash a check for or give any money to an employer. Reputable employers will not require you to pay for anything on your own or cash a check on their behalf before starting your job.
  6. Be wary of an employer who offers you a job before even speaking with you. This is not a common practice among reputable employers.

If you believe you have been contacted by or given your personal information to a fraudulent employer, review the steps provided in the linked article. Remember always to stay safe while job searching and never hesitate to flag an employer or reach out to ASCC@wsu.edu if you have any concerns. Happy job searching!
