Director of Finance, The Newseum

Sherry is the Director of Finance at the Newseum in Washington, DC. She explains how, after starting out undecided in college, she climbed the ranks to get where she is today.

>> I'm Sherry Minear, and I'm the director of finance here at the Freedom Forum Newseum. I manage the day to day accounting and finance operations, that's accounts payable, payroll. It's kind of the bread and butter of what we do. And then we roll into weekly procedures in financial statements. And then on annual basis, we do annual audits from independent-- an independent audit from-- comes and does that for us. And we do tax filings local, state, federal. I think that the one thing that we really focus on is the integrity and data most of all, and that was one of the things that as I came in here, one of our priorities were to make sure that that data was very correct. And I think the second thing that we really try to make ourselves unique is that we don't want to be a typical finance department. We want to deliver excellent customer service. And we have lots of different customers. Our employees are our customers, our visitors that comes to the newseum are our customers. So-- and we try to deliver excellent customer service and not be a typical and flexible finance department. >> Sure. >> We're really-- we have a really solid team and we pretty much don't do a lot of over time and that's a little bit unusual. But during certain seasons, you will inflammation-- when you're preparing for the audit or tax time, when the tax returns are-- tax returns are becoming more and more complicated and more and more people have to get involved and kind of the government's issues that they're-- you're answering on there. So it gets a little bit longer on those times of the year but mostly, regular, normal working hours.
