Highlights from Cassidy’s internship

‘My internship experience has been amazing so far. Last summer I had the opportunity to intern in Spokane at KHQ, and this summer I have made it all the way to Seattle. I would have to emphatically say I enjoy working with the reporting team the most at FOX 13. The knowledge, and storytelling ability of these journalists are unparalleled to anything I have ever seen. I have covered multiple breaking news events alongside industry professionals, allowing me to bring what I have learned in the classroom into the field. Covering these events allows me to think on my feet, and write a story as the events unfold right in front of me. Last week I covered an officer involved shooting in Kent. When we arrived at the scene we collected information from police, fire, fellow reporters, and even pedestrian bystanders who witnessed the incident. I then combined the information I received into a script, and filmed a stand-up outside of the scene. The stand-up is now integrated into my professional news reel, which I will use to apply to jobs upon graduation in December.’
How networking and interview preparation helped Cassidy secure the internship

‘Networking played a key role in helping me land this internship. Since my freshman year I have maintained contact with several journalists in the Seattle area. Before applying to the role, I individually messaged each one, letting them know I had applied, and sending them my cover letter draft to look over. My connections were more than happy to give feedback, and even send emails of recommendation to help me secure my interview. Having excellent interview skills is another thing that was to my advantage. I always make sure I thoroughly research the company, their mission, and familiarize myself with their work before stepping into an interview. This is so I am prepared to answer questions with responses that align with the company’s needs, and be the best candidate I can be.’
Advice for aspiring interns

‘Advice I would give someone in my shoes, is to network and get involved before your junior, or senior year when you are looking to land an internship. Activities like clubs, RSO’s, or student government will set you apart from other candidates, and give you real job experience that will prepare you to be a better intern. Networking is also of extreme importance. I like to DM professionals on Instagram, or on LinkedIn. Most are happy to help, and will go out of their way to set up phone calls, luncheons, or even Zoom meetings. The worst someone can say is no, so put yourself out there and be confident!’
