The position is for one academic year, with 13 – 15 weeks of work per semester. Students will not work during academic breaks (e.g., Spring Break, Winter Break) or on university holidays.

Position Overview: The Peer Tutor provides drop-in tutoring for students and small groups in the Bechtel Tutoring Center of the Learning Commons. Tutors facilitate student learning in specific courses, in addition to helping students develop effective skills for studying, note-taking, testing, and time-management. In collaboration with the course instructor, the tutor might provide help sessions for exams or major projects.

Students from all academic disciplines are invited to apply. We are especially interested in applicants who can tutor for biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering, computer science, or accounting/business management.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Participating in training and orientation activities; Attending a weekly organizational meeting
  • Attending all scheduled tutoring sessions; Communicating with the Tutoring Center Coordinator about schedule changes, absences, and administrative tasks
  • Creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for students
  • Maintaining a calm and professional demeanor with students
  • Facilitating student learning through effective tutoring practices
  • Complying with FERPA requirements regarding confidential information shared by students about academic performance and/or personal information
  • Developing outreach materials for the tutoring center; Visiting classes, labs, or student organizations to promote tutoring services offered in the Bechtel Tutoring Center
  • Entering and submitting work hours for approval for each pay period in the Workday system
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate student on the WSU Tri-Cities campus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with peers in academic-related activities
  • Grade of “B” or higher in the course(s) they would like to tutor
  • Support from previous instructor(s) of the course(s) they would like to tutor (or similar courses, if taken elsewhere)
  • Available to work 6 – 10 hours/week between 8 AM – 6 PM, Monday – Friday

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with peer tutoring or peer mentoring
  • Capacity to tutor more than one course in a subject area (e.g., could tutor multiple MATH courses, multiple CPT_S courses)

  2. Resume, including the name and email address for at least one current or former instructor who can comment on your knowledge in the subject area(s) you are interested in
  3. Transcripts (unofficial are acceptable) – please submit a transcript for all undergraduate work so far, including community college. This is especially important if you completed coursework in the subject area(s) you wish to tutor at multiple institutions.
