Engineering Intern (METS) – On Site in Pascagoula, Mississippi

Serco’s Training and Experience Program (STEP) is designed to provide undergraduate university and college students paid accredited internship opportunities to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience in a professional environment.

Our 2025 internship opportunities are available throughout the U.S. and Canada, beginning on May 27th and concluding on August 8th, with 1 week off June 30th-July 4th. You will work with your manager to identify the best working schedule for you, working no more than an average of 36 hours a week with the added perk of half-days on Fridays.

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, you will attend training sessions taught by skilled leaders in our company to better prepare you for a full-time career.

Is this the internship opportunity for you?

  • Are you passionate about how things work?
  • Do you seek to work for a company committed to positively supporting our Navy and the military?
  • Are you an innovative, driven worker looking to make an impact?

If your answer to these questions is “Yes,” the Engineering Internship is an excellent opportunity for you! By evaluating the construction efforts of Navy Ships and identifying areas to improve, you will both discover your place at Serco this summer and have a lasting impact on our organization and our Navy.

Over the course of the summer, you will network and interface with critical business leaders to include our CEO and members of our Executive Management Team (EMT). You will report to Quinten King [https://www.linkedin.com/in/quintenking/]. Quinten leads our team helping to provide oversight during the construction of Aegis Class Destroyers for the Navy in Pascagoula MS.

As an Engineering Intern, you will support our Maritime Engineering, Technology & Sustainment (METS) Business Unit which is responsible for industry-leading capabilities in naval ship and submarine design, systems and engineering services, and production support, logistics and in-service sustainment. This complements Serco’s other engineering capabilities in shipboard, shore and systems installation and upgrade services to the Navy.

You will join a team that is responsible for overseeing production efforts on ships under construction on the Arleigh Burke Guided Missile Destroyer Contract. This impacts the Navy by capturing and correcting engineering discrepancies in process during the ship construction to deliver a better ship. In your role, you will become part of a team working on field engineering solutions of the US Navy’s newest ships and craft. You will become well versed in engineering principles and evaluate designs in terms of hull, mechanical, and electrical impacts. You will support the evaluation of ship construction, machinery and related equipment including propulsion machines and power supply systems to ensure requirements are defined and met according to specifications. You will perform engineering work in analysis, design, development, evaluation, planning, testing and operation in support of system and technical product development. Duties often include the collection of information and data, performance of various tests, and the development of technical documents. You will also be asked to provide recommendations for improvements to existing quality systems and applicable company procedures and guidelines.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development of ship construction and machinery
  • Work alongside and support higher-level engineers
  • Perform basic engineering duties
  • Comply with quality and security procedures

During your Internship, you will gain exposure to a wide range of teams within the organization including: Aegis Destroyer Production Team and Aegis Destroyer Technical Team. This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly engaged and collaborative engineering team.

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or 4-year degree at an accredited university, or projected Spring 2025 graduate
  • Ideal candidates will be rising juniors, rising seniors or Spring 2025 graduates
  • Pursuing a degree in Engineering, naval architecture, or related program
  • Candidate must be eligible to obtain a security clearance
  • Basic knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, hardware, and software
  • Basic internal team communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite programs, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
