The tech job market continues to evolve as AI is reshaping both the skills employers seek and the roles candidates pursue.
To better understand these shifts, this report analyzes data from 231,000+ interview preparation sessions completed by more than 200,000 candidates between January and June 2026. The anonymized dataset was provided by Dataford, an interview preparation platform used by candidates pursuing careers across software engineering, data, AI, and other technical fields.
1. AI companies attracted the highest candidate interest
One of the clearest shifts in 2026 is the growing interest in AI-native companies.
Candidates increasingly prepared for interviews at organizations such as:
- NVIDIA
- OpenAI
- Anthropic
- Databricks
- Anduril
While traditional Big Tech companies (like Google and Meta) are still hiring, AI companies are experiencing the faster growth in interview preparation activity.
2. AI Engineer became the fastest-growing technical roles
Among all technical positions analyzed, AI Engineer showed one of the largest increases in candidate preparation.
Only a few years ago, this title was relatively uncommon. Today, it has become one of the most popular career paths among candidates preparing for technical interviews. This is definitely a place where students still have an edge and could pursue in 2026.
3. New AI-focused job titles are emerging
Several job titles that were relatively rare in previous years appeared much more frequently in 2026.
The most notable ones include:

4. AI is changing interviews

The findings suggest that the tech job market is evolving and we need to adapt to these changes.
AI-related companies and roles continue to experience rapid growth and the new Meta and Google is now Anthropic and OpenAI. Employers increasingly value candidates who combine technical expertise with business sense, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively alongside AI.
For students entering the workforce, the opportunity is not simply to learn AI tools, but applying those in your workflows to be more efficient. And I don’t know what will happen in 2027 and beyond but what I know is that things will continue to change and we need to adapt and fast.
