Graduate Refresh: Four Tips to Improve your CV or Resume!

As we look ahead to 2025, many graduates and Ph. Ds will be busy using their winter break to update or create their future application materials. Depending on the type of materials required for future goals—either a Curriculum Vitae (CV) or a Resume—thoughts about what should be included, formatting, and how to best highlight skills are the focus for many WSU graduate students.

Here are four tips for developing your CV or resume as a graduate student:

  1. Contact your PI or faculty supervisor during the semester and ask for an initial review of your current materials. This check-in will offer insights into what to improve and bring awareness to formatting trends that should be included.
  2. Check out the Institutional Memberships offered by the WSU Professional Development Initiative (PDI)— specifically Versatile Ph. D. for graduate examples of resumes and CVs based on industry.
  3. Log in to the PDI Recordings Library and check out the video “CV to Resume: A Graduate Students Road Map” by the Academic Success and Career Center. In this recording, they outline what makes a successful Curriculum Vitae and how to utilize your CV to create an impactful resume when applying for opportunities. Presentation slides are also available for download.
  4. Connect with the Academic Success and Career Center for career coaching, interview prep, help with job search, and a second set of eyes for your materials throughout the year.
