Three Steps to Finding an Internship as an International Student

Are you ready to take your professional development to the next level? Are you looking to connect with internships while studying in the US?   With hundreds of thousands of internships being offered on Handshake, knowing how to utilize the resources available to WSU students is essential. Here are three easy steps to get you started:

STEP 1 Connect with WSU International Services to learn about the requirements for CPT, OPT

Did you know that as an International student, you can participate in internships via Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT)? There are specific parameters for OPT and CPT, so we strongly recommend you connect with WSU International Student and Scholar Services to learn more about each process.

STEP 2 Utilize Handshake to Search out Internships.

Handshake is the primary platform for searching for job and internship opportunities for Cougs. As a WSU student, you already have access to Handshake and only need to log in here using your WSU credentials (email and password). Once logged in, clickJobs”, then “All Filters”, and then select “Jobs that are open to candidates with Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and/or Optional Practical Training (OPT)” under the “Work Authorization” category. Finally, press “Show results”. You should see several paid and unpaid internship opportunities being offered on Handshake. It’s crucial to start this search sooner rather than later, as OPT or CPT processes have specific timelines.

STEP 3  Get help from the Career Center

You will need a resume and cover letter to apply to most positions. We strongly recommend contacting a career specialist to get help with the application and interview process. Academic Success and Career Center Career support services are free and available via Handshake here.
