Need to meet with Advisor to plan next semester? This is what you should do to prepare.

Step one…schedule your meeting!

This time of the semester, advisors are super busy so the sooner you can schedule, the better! Don’t wait till the last minute with the expectation that you will be able to get in for a meeting right away. Advisors have a huge number of students that they work with so it’s important to plan and schedule early!

Some advisors might have a bookings link to schedule an appointment, or they want you to email them to set up a meeting. Make sure you check on your MyWSU to see their preferred method of scheduling but when in doubt, send them an email!

Now that you have a schedule meeting, lets prepare for it!

Since you are meeting to discuss your class schedule for the next semester, be sure to bring some information with you! First, I would bring some idea of where your grades currently sit in your classes. This is important as many of the classes you are going to take next semester have prerequisites of classes you are currently taking. If you are not doing too hot in one of your classes, that might impact what you take next semester. If you are sitting with good grades at this point, then you are in the clear!

Something else that might help make your meeting go smoothly, is taking some time before hand to see what classes are being offered next semester. See if any classes that interest you might fit into your requirements for your degree and take note of them! Take time to look at UCORE requirements and what classes might fit in your schedule. This can help save time when you and your advisor are going through what classes you are going to take. Having a tentative schedule to share with your advisor to check helps a ton!

And lastly, ask questions!

If you have any questions about your current degree plan, your timeline for graduation, or any other questions related to resources or questions about the university, bring them! Your academic advisor is a wonderful resource available for you at the university! They know all the resources that are available and can help you! Use that resource! Like I said earlier, they are super busy so they might not be available to chat at a minute’s notice so take advantage of the meeting you have scheduled. Bring all the questions you have!

Now all that being said, let’s not lose too much focus! We are still in the current semester so let’s finish out strong! Remember to use your resources, tutoring, office hours, writing center, and everything else to rock the rest of the semester! Go Cougs!
